mailed to 13 Washington Street, Newton, NJ 07860 The Rabbi's Desk Dear friends, This month we mark the 60th anniversary of the country of Israel. Many of us cannot remember a world that does not include this nation. We take it for granted that there is a place to which every Jewish person in the world could flee to if there were trouble. We accept that there is a nation in which the Jewish people form a majority and the traditions of Judaism are primary. We sometimes forgot what a miracle it is that Europe did not succeed in killing us all off, and that instead, we have flourished here in the Americas and in our ancient homeland in the Middle East. We will celebrate this wondrous occasion with a unique program. Ms. Kinue Weinstein will discuss her Jewish journey, including her time in Jerusalem, this Sunday, May 4 at 11 am. A bagel reception will follow. A special thanks to Stephen WP for setting up this program. Please join us for a great morning! Warmly, Rabbi Cathy
Abigail Lauren Anker Bat Mitzvah 12 Iyar, 5768 | May 17, 2008
Abbi is a graduate of Tiny Town Preschool, Alpine Elementary School and the Mohawk Avenue School. She is currently a High Honor Roll 7th grader at the Sparta Middle School.
Abbi is an 8-year veteran of the JCSC religious school having started in Kindergarten with Mrs. Tripp and Mrs. Connelly.
Abbi’s hobbies include shopping and playing softball. This year Abbi is a pitcher on the top-level Sparta Blue Diamonds 12 and Under travel softball team. She also plays the tuba in the 7th grade band.
Abbi’s B’nai Mitzvah project this year was to prime and paint the large classroom upstairs. After attending class in that room for 5 years, she decided the room needed to be painted, and she wanted to do it. So, Abbi gave up 4 days during her winter vacation to work in our temple and make it a better and brighter place.
Abbi would like to thank everybody that has helped her prepare for her Bat Mitzvah ceremony – especially Rabbi Cathy and Neil Lewinter. Rabbi Cathy not only taught her B’nai Class and worked with her in private lessons, but she also encouraged Abbi to lead services and really made her feel very comfortable with our service. Neil volunteered an hour of his time almost every week this year to work with Abbi as well. He has been a great help in teaching her both the Friday night and Saturday morning services. With all of this preparation, Abbi is looking forward to leading services and chanting her Haftorah on her birthday – May 17.
